Salisbury Sculpture Show 2010-2011

Paris Alexander's work "The Burning" was awarded an Honorarium for the Salisbury's Annual Juried 2010-2011 Sculpture Exhibition. The work was installed at Rowan Library, Salisbury, NC. Juried by Jeff York, Public Arts Administrator for the Town of Chapel Hill.

“Although somewhat static and heavy as the materials from which the sculpture was carved, I appreciated the craftsmanship and labor required of the artist to free the image from the stone. The rough solidity and verticality of the limestone hand contrasts well with the smooth, horizontal marble slab on which it is placed. There is a story being told by the two sides of the sculpture, but like an ancient monument recently unearthed, its meaning remains enigmatic.”

-Jeff York, Public Arts Administrator for the Town of Chapel Hill.

Juried by Dr. Lawrence Wheeler, Director of the North Carolina Museum of Art

Here are the comments made by Dr. Lawrence Wheeler to the Craven Arts Council on Nemesis:

"Dr. Lawrence Wheeler our show juror mentioned that he’s known your work for quite some time” and that you “always achieve the mark.” Calling it “original” and “expressive,” he had the feeling that “there’s a figure in there, almost mummified, trying to get out, to live and breathe free.” He also mentioned how your carved striations in the limestone have great rhythm, “ saying, he loves “the technical inventiveness” with which you carve."
